Classifying Marketing Channels in SiteCatalyst

Classifying your marketing channels isn't so obvious in SiteCatalyst so here's a quick post to explain how to do it.

Why add classification to your Channels?

There's many situations where you'd want to be more granular with your channel reports. Using Advertising as an example you'd most likely want to break down by; search engine, display/search and possibly keyword. This will allow you to view your channel traffic and first/last touch reports by Google/Bing/Keyword or whatever you decide to classify.

Quick step by step guide

1) Adding your channel classification is in a different place to normal; Admin> Admin Console> Report Suites> Marketing Channels> Marketing Channel Classifications

2) You can add classification at both first and last touch channel level:

3) In this example I've added "Sub-channel" to the last touch marketing channel detail.

4) Now we go to the normal place for managing our classifications: Admin> SAINT Classifications and download the template. See below what the .tab file looks like in Notepad:

5) Now the less obvious detail - the "key" refers to the channel's value based on your channel processing rules: Admin> Admin Console> Report Suites> Marketing Channels> Marketing channel rules. So in the example below it's the URL parameter "ECID" value .

6) Upload as normal and you're done.

Hope this helps.
